Chatham and Lee Counties, NC
In 2014, Duke Energy announced it would be permanently closing its coal ash basins for its NC power plants and would store the nearly 2 million tons of coal ash it had produced in Lee and Chatham county mines owned by Charah, a Kentucky-based coal ash disposal company.
Charah hired ClearWater to perform a comprehensive wetland delineation, a threatened and endangered species survey, and secure a Section 404 US Army Corps of Engineers Individual Permit and 401 Water Quality Certification to impact the 4,256 linear feet of stream and 1.62 acres of wetlands for the development of two landfills suitable for the disposal of the Duke Energy coal ash.
