Chatham and Lee Counties, NC
In 2014, Duke Energy announced it would permanently close its coal ash basins for its North Carolina power plants and store the nearly 2 million tons of coal ash it had produced in Lee and Chatham county mines owned by Charah, a Kentucky-based coal ash disposal company.
Charah hired EnviroScience (formerly ClearWater Environmental Consultants, Inc.) to perform a comprehensive wetland delineation, a threatened and endangered species survey, and secure a Section 404 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Individual Permit and 401 Water Quality Certification to impact the 4,256 linear feet of stream and 1.62 acres of wetlands for the development of two landfills suitable for the disposal of the Duke Energy coal ash.
